Josephine Hicks with her artwork at The Maze (Brent Cross Town)

Artist Josephine Hicks, aka Hixxy, creates bold, botanically inspired paintings and murals with surrealist sensibilities. Jo joined us on 10 August and painted a beautiful new artwork, ‘Returning’, in front of a live audience as part of The Maze, our immersive art installation.

Watch Jo talk about her inspiration for the artwork and her involvement in the project here.

ABOUT JO HICKS

Jo started drawing and crafting at an early age and fell in love with collage, painting and screenprinting while studying Fine Art at Liverpool University. As her works grew, requiring ever larger screens and canvases, her brother introduced her to street art and mural painting, which suited her perfectly. Her bold, vibrant murals which still often have a collage-like feel, celebrate nature and biodiversity in urban environments and can be seen in many sites across London, in several other UK cities, and in Dublin. Find out more about Jo here.

"My piece at Brent Cross Town is about togetherness and embracing these green pockets in hard city environments. It's an escapism from urban city living."

Located next to the Visitor Pavilion, and just a five-minute walk from the new Brent Cross West station, The Maze is a bright and brilliant art installation that invites visitors to immerse themselves in colours and forms inspired by the New London Fabulous movement.

Throughout the summer, three talented female artists have added works to The Maze: Amara Por Dios created her piece at the launch of The Maze in June, Lois O’Hara added her piece on 27 July and Jo Hicks painted the final artwork on 10 August. Next, it’s your turn!

Join us on 14 September for a family-friendly workshop run in collaboration with London Mural Festival. The festival is the city’s largest celebration of street art, and this year’s edition is focused on the theme of connection. Artist Hatch is creating a black and white mural as part of The Maze, and we’d like you all to come down and help to colour it.

This event runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday 14 September. It’s free but booking your slot is recommended.
