London’s largest fully-electric energy centre

The Primary Substation, part of the Brent Cross Town development, has an architectural wrap designed by IF_DO Archiects working with North London artist Lakwena (Brent Cross Town)

Brent Cross Town is set to be the first community in London to benefit from a large-scale, electric energy centre. The centre will provide heating, hot water and cooling to 6,700 homes – and over three-million square feet of office space alongside retail and leisure from 2027.

With planning permission granted, the project makes Brent Cross Town a leading example for the future of sustainable housing and commercial spaces in London.

What does this mean for local residents and businesses?

  • affordable heating in winter and cooling in summer
  • the creation of long-term, local jobs and apprenticeships in the green-energy sector
  • a shared network delivering reliable and efficient heating
  • no time and money lost maintaining individual boilers and AC units

To deliver the project, developer Related Argent and Barnet Council are partnering with Vattenfall, who has led similar, award-winning developments in Bristol and Edinburgh in recent years.

The Government has designated £14m of its Green Heat Network Fund to completing the energy centre, which will be one of the largest in the UK. It’s an exciting – and crucial – step towards reaching net-zero carbon emissions in the capital, which the Mayor of London has committed to by 2030.

In addition to the environmental advantages of sustainable housing, the green-heat network solidifies Brent Cross Town’s reputation as a desirable neighbourhood at the cutting-edge of technology, providing efficient homes for modern families.

Business owners in the town will also benefit from low-carbon heating, with consumers demonstrating a preference for businesses that show support for the environment. Brent Cross Town will deliver green solutions to organisations looking for commercial space over the next few years.

The creation of the all-electric energy centre reflects Brent Cross Town’s status as a community putting people and planet first. As Morwenna Hall, Executive Director of Related Argent, noted, “We are proud to be delivering a town that will meet the needs of future generations of Londoners.”
