A New Artwork by Giles Round is Unveiled at Brent Cross West Station

Round has dedicated the large-scale architectural frieze to his mother, Maggie Round, who, for a time, worked in the Brent Cross Shopping Centre branch of John Lewis. Combining personal memories with ideas about how place is essential to our sense of identity, and how the buildings around connect us with the landscapes of our lives, the artwork is a moving ode to memory, love and loss. In the artist’s own words, “The work is a monument to love. It is for everyone, in particular, all we have lost.”

Ahead of the opening of the new Brent Cross West mainline train station on 10th December, a new artwork has been unveiled inside the station by celebrated British artist Giles Round. Spanning The Arbour (the eastern entrance into the station), Time passes & still I think of you is the fifth public artwork created for Brent Cross Town.

Comprising vibrant, repeating, recoloured and rotated modular blocks that command the attention of passers by, the frieze extends along the full length of the south side and upper levels of The Arbour and is 48-metres in length at its longest point. Its colours and shapes are inspired by the forms of the urban built environment; simplified decorative elements common to buildings around the world. It represents a focus on inviting the outside in, reproducing a familiar cityscape inside this brand new building.

Round has previously worked on projects in spaces of connectivity, including his much-admired project DESIGN WORK LEISURE, commissioned as part of London’s Underground’s Art on the Underground project, between 2015 and 2017.

Situated on the Midland Main Line between Cricklewood and Hendon, the new Brent Cross West station is only a five-minute walk from Claremont Park, and its Thameslink trains will transport passengers from St. Pancras International in as little as 12 minutes.
